Working in nephro ward, tagging day 2 (6am-10pm)
Nurse: doctor tolong insert branula satu bed 22, kak Ram nama dia, regular customer, hat cakap banyak suara deras, suka melawak dia la tu...
me: okay kak.
nurse: tapi line dia susah tau..
me: erk okay kak..,saya try.. Noted on the bed 50+ years old lady, dark skin, chubby with her sweet smile looking at me..
me: Kak Ram saya nak msuk jarum boleh?
patient: cucuk ja la doktor, buat la apa pon, tapi nak habaq kak pnya urat memang payah tau
me: tak apa saya cuba kak nah *holding her hand searching for vein For those who don't know how ESRF patient's line, go and find one in nephrology ward. It is damn hard, almost invisible. Luckily that evening around 8 pm,I managed to settle all the tasks, just waiting for the night shift to come. For 20 minutes i've been searching for line, still invisible... me: hmm kak, tak nmpk la urat kak..
pt: haa kan dah kata, tak apa Doktor cari pelan2 kot ada mana2
because there is no vein seen, I need to blindly poke with using my own vein as guidance. I look at my forearm n hand guessing where could possibly the vein will be.Then i started to poke.. I poked her 7 times and all failed no blood flow no nothing. Each attempt i failed i'll stop for few minutes and talk with her, ask her about anything, her kids, their jobs, her hobby, her favourite food, and her younger times plus holding her hand n compress at the place that i've poked, to relief the pain... I almost give up, it is already 40 minutes i've been trying to insert a branula..
me: kak saya mintak maaf cucuk bnyak kali, memang susah, saya try sekali lg lasst, kalau tak dapat saya cari kawan saya yang lagi terer kak nah
patient:.. *smiling
I looked at my finger, I see one vein on my 4th finger, very small.. I looked at her hand, ikat ketat-ketat, luckily one small vein appears also at her 4th finger, I tried using blue branula and puff!, got blood flow! I quickly put a plaster n try to flush. Yess Alhamdulillah finally succeed.. Quicky administred iv abx for her. me: fuhh kak ,lega dpt jugak, sori kak nah cucuk dekat 8 kali.
pt: wah Doktor teror la, *quickly lift up her hand , ni ampa tgok doktor nak minang aku! tgok dia boh "cincin" kat jari aku, hampa ada ka? haha ( while showing her hand to other patients)
pt: saya simpan "cincin" ni nah Dr haha Her face is filled with smile, joking with her neighbours. Even though i poked her 8 times she never complained, such a strong woman. The following week, a nurse came to me.
nurse: Doktor, ni kak Ram sayang sungguh kat doktor dia buat murtabak daging sebekas.
I ate them, fuhh padu memang sedap. The next following month i was allocated to different ward, one day I walked passed by a nephrology ward nurse, they told me, "kak Ram selalu dok sebut nama doktor, dia kata doktor paling pandai psang branula"
I just smiled , it is weird I poked her 8 times ,8 FREAKING times but she still say i am good? weird.. very weird.. Then i realize it is never actually about my branula skill whatsoever. It is all about the time that i spent talking with her, like a son n a mother , one of the topic is her favourite food and it is murtabak daging and i also said that i love murtabak. Maybe that is why she made me one.. Kak Ram taught me a very important lesson, doctors can give all sorts of medications to treat, but the best treatment is always love. Love ur patient like u love ur own family.
Terima kasih Kak Ram.
Arwah kak Ram.
Semoga ditempatkan di kalangan org beriman, insyaAllah.
