That is the best Malay proverbs that suits me at that time,my first day working as Houseman,my first posting was in Orthopaedic department. Everything seems strange, knows nothing, don't know what to do,looking here and there, cold sweat with mild palpitation, totally blurr..
Everybody is busy doing their jobs, some sitting at the counter busy writing, some pushing trolleys fill up with "green box", "water bottles", gauze, wearing mask and aprons.
"Hi, saya syazwan new houseman first poster..."
It took me 1 month plus to be able to catch up with the system, and the abbreviations. Even my mentor that time, because i am so bad,he told me "syazwan your off tag assessment is to present case to me properly and basic abbreviation in orthopaedic . If u cannot pass that i don't know what to say". He even appointed one senior ho as my mentor just to check everything that i write is correct with all the abbreviations.
"Dr! branula satu, bed 18!" Dup dap! dup dap! my heart pumping fast.
"what branula again?" I said to myself. Even inserting branula can be very scary when you are first poster. Dapat pula patient yang jenis tak pandai jaga branula, bila nak pergi insert, ditanya balik kita "apa? cucuk lagi? tadi bukan cucuk dah ka dr!" hah sudah jenuh nak menjawab.
I am so blessed and great full to join orthopaedic as my first posting at that time. Instead of the orthopaedics knowledge itself I did learn one of the most important lesson that time which is “ to become at least, at least a function houseman”.
My seniors that time were very helpful and awesome, they taught me how to work fast but safe, carry out plan based on priority, and most important thing is how to manage time properly so that you can eat at least once and never missed solat but at the same time must complete all your tasks, not to pass over all the "shitty" things at your colleague.
And never ever ever MIA. Once u MIA, you already make your colleague workload becomes double, stress level also double. 'Bukankah menyusahkan orang itu satu perkara yang dikeji'.
Sometimes during junior time , people tend to ask your help to do this and that, never mind be 'ringan tulang' eventhough it will be tiring. Remember "jika kita permudahkan urusan orang, Allah akan permudahkan urusan kita," trust me. You'll be surprised how Allah will help you when you are in trouble.
We even go watch 'Kingsman' together after work, have dinner, and played futsal. They showed me, working as HO actually not so bad like other people said, “HO ship is like hell , Ho ni tak ada life etc”. As long as you can find time and how to appreciate it, InsyaAllah your life will be much better.
I do learn a lot in this department especially all the procedure such as dressing , wound debridement, toilet and suturing . There is one case Toilet and suturing ( T&S) patient involved in MVA ( motor vehicle accident) and he sustained a few fractures and one laceration wound over fingers. That day was very busy, my boss and seniors all in Emergency department attending new cases, I called my bos and told that there is one case already in ward but got laceration wound over fingers and still bleeding. Usually T&S should be done in ED but maybe it is to busy, they missed this. "Syazwan hang buat la T&S hang belajaq dah kan?" Erk yes, i do watched a few times before, but never done it alone. Scared but excited, i prepared all the things and sit down comfortably in the procedure room and start my first ever T&S procedure by myself.
After 40 minutes i managed to settle the suturing, i took picture and send to my bos. " wow pandai hang jahit, ni bukan first time ni, ni macam dah banyak kali" My bos said through whatsapp. Fuh kembang bak hang bos puji. Suddenly he replies, " eh sat tu cincin ka dekat jari hang jahit tu? Awat tak buka dulu sebelum jahit! call bomba cepat satgi tangan dia bengkak jadi isu lain pulak!" Erk baru nak bangga tak jadi bangga, i forgot to removed the ring, damn it. I quickly call bomba ask them to come. Fuh luckily nothing bad happened. Thanks to my senior that taught me how to suture, teach me step by steps until i can do it by myself.
So to have a good senior during your junior posting also very important.Their are the one who will spend most of the time with you, be a good junior, humble and learn as much as you can.
"Saya first poster " is the best ticket for you to use it if you want to learn something new or doing any honest mistakes, so use it!
Even until today, all my seniors are scattered all over Malaysia, we still keep in touch. Thank you guys, may Allah grant you guys the best rewards insyaAllah.
Alhamdulillah 4 months passed by, orthopaedic done! Next OnG??
